Editing

Build a multitrack timeline, work with audio and subtitles, and export video or an editing interchange file.

This guide includes newer client features, some of which may be awaiting release. Availability depends on the app version you have installed.

Assemble adopted Takes and imported footage or audio into a film. Your manually arranged timeline is the source of the edit.

Prepare media

Open Editing to browse adopted shots from the current episode, or import local video and audio. Filter by name, scene, shot or source.

An empty timeline does not populate automatically. Import adds media to the library; drag or append it to create a clip on the timeline.

Video import accepts MP4, MOV and M4V with a playable video track, limited to 100 MB and 30 seconds per file. Audio accepts the formats listed by the dialog, including MP3, M4A, WAV, AIF/AIFF, AAC and CAF. A correct extension does not guarantee a usable codec or an undamaged file.

Arrange the timeline

  1. Drag video or audio from the library onto a matching track type.
  2. Move clips to change their start time, and drag edges to trim the used source range.
  3. Add tracks of the same type for layering. Gaps are allowed.
  4. Enable snapping when you want boundaries to align with other clips or the playhead.

Tracks are grouped as subtitles, video and audio. Higher video tracks appear over lower ones. Follow the drag feedback when a placement would create an unsupported overlap.

Deleting a timeline clip does not delete its source from the library. You can use the same source more than once and trim each use independently.

Sound, subtitles and preview

Use track controls to enable video, original video audio, audio tracks and subtitles. Picture visibility and original-audio muting are separate: hiding an image does not necessarily mute it.

Create subtitles in the workbench, edit their text, timing and style, and check their position in preview. Subtitle files and other editing projects are not currently imported to create subtitle tracks.

Press Space to play or pause when focus is outside a text field, menu or dialog. Wait for required media to be ready. Gaps in the timeline play as black.

What happens when adoption changes?

Existing clips keep the media used when they were placed. Changing or clearing an ordinary Take’s adoption affects available media, not existing clips. Make ordinary replacements manually.

Upscaled Takes have a separate confirmation. If you adopt a 2K or 4K result while clips in the current episode still refer to its source Take, Rolin asks whether to use the upscaled media in the edit.

Confirming preserves in/out points, timeline positions, volume and transitions. Keeping the original leaves the timeline alone while the upscaled Take remains adopted. If there are no clips referencing its source, there is no replacement prompt and no new clip is inserted.

Check preview and actual export parameters afterward. Upscaled media may have a resampled frame rate; a 4K source badge does not guarantee that an entire mixed-resolution edit exports at 4K.

Export a video

Export the timeline as MP4. The export follows current track output settings, and enabled subtitles are burned in. Check muted or hidden tracks, subtitles and gaps first, then open the output file to verify it.

Choose the interchange export for your target application. Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve use FCPXML; Premiere uses XML, with accompanying media.

The target application imports the interchange file to create its own project. Subtitle styles and some effects are constrained by the exchange format. Test a short sequence with your target application version first.
